the formatting got messed up so sorry about that but it should be easy if you know the song to know the chord changes..the only thing really needed is some sort of chord walkup connecting the second and 3rd verses since it changes keys

WHEN I PAINT MY MASTERPIECE- Grateful Dead/Bobby Weir version
Tabbed by yours truly aka Ben Davis

Intro ? G-C-G
G C G
Oh, the streets of Rome are filled with rubble
G D C G
Ancient footprints are everywhere
G C G
You can almost think that you're seein' double
G D C G
On a cold, dark night on the Spanish Stairs
D C G
Got to hurry on back to my hotel room
D C G
Where I've got me a date with Botticelli's niece
G C G
She promised that she'd be right there with me
G D C G
When I paint my masterpiece

Oh, the hours I've spent inside the Coliseum
Dodging lions and wastin' time
Oh, those mighty kings of the jungle
I could hardly stand to see 'em
Yes, it sure has been a long, hard climb
Train wheels runnin' through the back of my memory
When I ran on the hilltop following a pack of wild geese
Someday, everything is gonna be smooth like a rhapsody
When I paint my masterpiece

A D A
I left Rome and landed in Brussels
D A E A
On a plane ride so bumpy that I almost cried
A D A
Clergymen in uniform and young girls pullin' muscles
D A E A
Everyone was there to greet me when I stepped inside
E D A E D A
Newspapermen eating candy had to be held down by big police
A D A
Someday, everything is gonna be different
A E D A
When I paint my masterpiece

Try spacing your chords along the top using underscores, like so:

G__________________C____________________G
Oh, the streets of Rome are filled with rubble
G_______D_______C____________G
Ancient footprints are everywhere

during the verses for anyone who cares, that little thing booby does is a Am7/G

E-3-3-3-3----
B-0-1-0-0----
G-0-0-0-0----
D-0-2-0-0----
A-2-x-x-2----
e-3-3-3-3----

you probably already new that, but I thought I'd put it out there as it's my favorite bit of the song (besides the key change of course)

everybody loves a proper key change

I'm not sure why or where I got this from but I play this begining in A and modulating to B. Great tune for futzing between major and minor scales and chromatics in the lead. Bend that flat third in this one.

all the other tabs for this song online start in A which is how Dylan played it, Bob Weir changed his version though

Garcia played it in A w/JGB, but didn't do the modulation.

That's probably it tiger. I think I first got it off a Calderone Concert Hall JGB show I have on tape. And you're right, no modulation.
