you should just imrpov around in this scale: A B C# D# E F# G#. you can also use this scale to bridge the gap between scarlet and fire. -kevin

how would i go about improving around that scale? learn the major scales for those letters and go from there and play notes that are within those scales or what? i'm kinda confused about scales and such still.... any suggestions?

to imrpov to scarlet/fire, like jerry does use the notes A B C# D# E F# G#
they can be used anywhere on the fretboard. i recommend learning the illustration below in sections..first learn all the notes from fre 4 to fret 7 ...this will make it much easier... that is also the primary position he jams around

nut-- \/ frets 1>24
E X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X| |X|X|
B X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X|X| |X|
G |X|X| |X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X| |X|X| |X| |
D |X|X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X| |
A X| |X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X|X|
E X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X|X| |X| |X| |X|X|

i hope this helps, if there are any question at all dont hesitate to ask...my aim sn is kevin7063 and i will be glad to help answer any questions, or if i dont know ill help figure it out......come get it crunk at bonnaroo this weekend

the original chart looks messed up so use this one...
disregard the "_" they are just there to make the chart line up correctly

B X| _|X| _|X|X| _|X| _|X|X| _|X| _|X| _|X|X| _|X| _|X|X| _|X|
G _|X|X| _|X| _|X| _|X|X| _|X| _|X|X| _|X| _|X| _|X|X| _|X| _|
D _|X|X| _|X| _|X|X| _|X| _|X| _|X|X| _|X| _|X|X| _|X| _|X| _|

how was bonnaroo? btw, that is the E major scale. you can improv in that scale for scarlet, and fire, and the gap in between.

bonnaroo was awesome...i went to the one last summer and i was unsure whether or not this year could be as good, but i had just as great a time as my first. thank you for letting me know the name of that scale. i thought that was the E major scale but i was not sure

no problem. if you go to www.wholenote.com, they have a whole bunch of scale charts under the beginners section.

whats the name of that scale? the one with the A B C# D# E F# G#

I believe it's A Dorian. Now I'm not even sure what key Scarlet is in. I would think B or E. If it's B then it's Mixolydian. If it's E then it's Ionian. I believe they're all the same notes. Though I certainly may be wrong. In any case they are the "right" notes.

The scale is E major/E Ionian. AKA B mixolydian or C# Dorian.

Scarlet is in the key of E

Thanks for straightening that out.

No problem :-)

I did get the advice once not hang on a single scale for Scarlet, but to be aware of the chord changes and emphasize them. But an E major scale is a pretty good way to get going.

Definitely,

Scarlet is one of the best examples for my "chord resonance" mantra especially over the A-E-B-A-E... part. What helps is that the triad notes for all three chords are included within the E Ionian scale.

You can get away with concentrating on the changes without thinking beyond E Ionian.

This is one of those songs that I have endless debates on what key it is in. I, too, believe it is in E but the very accomplished keyboard player in my band believes it is in B. Sweet Home Alabama is another of those songs. I believe SHA is in D with the progression going 1-7-4, not 5-4-1 if the song was in G (as some believe it to be).
I would be curious to understand your musical reasoning for determining the E key of Scarlet. I totally agree with you but would like more knowledge on how I can explain my position.
Thanks
