I get near perfect Mu-tron tone from the Q-tron Plus (at least I think so!). Sample here: https://youtu.be/hVicWaV_d4M?t=160

That said, I also have most all the other critical pieces in place (custom wolf, OBEL, Super IIs, FYD, MC-50, JBL k-120), which definitely helps. What's the rest of your rig?

I have several original Mu-trons. While they definitely sound the best, they can be very temperamental, vary widely from unit to unit, and fail often. I really like having the reliability of a new unit.

I’ve tried a bunch of them. With budget in mind, the best I’ve found is the Electro-Harmonix Micro Q-Tron (though not really “micro” in size). It was designed by Mike Beigel, the guy who designed the original Mutron III that Jerry and Stevie Wonder used. In the world of true mini/micro pedals, the Valeton Katfish can be had for around $40. It is surprisingly good and with a little fiddling can dial in a decent Jerry sound while taking up little space on your board. I have an original Mutron III and Beigel’s most recent Mu-FX Micro-Tron III. They both live in my studio. The Katfish is on my pedalboard.
