But for that passing chord in the intro, I have always played what looks like an A chord, but avoid the bass note so it doesn't sound like an a chord, and the rest of the band definitely doesn't hit that A with me--so it's definitely acting more like a passing chord. However, having watched Grateful Guitar Lesson Guy's lesson posted earlier in this thread (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1C-BQ3EZrA) his version sounds better to me so I think that after 3 decades of playing it slightly wrong, I'm going to change my tune, so to speak.
I try to stay off hitting the full chord .....
