I'm still trying to wrap my head (and ears) around the nuances of pickups/selector switches/eq vs. the subtle use of effects. I was listening to 5-8-77 at work the other day, and was really just falling in love with Bob's tone on Dancin'. It sounds clean, but it has a very subtle quality about that I can't seem to describe - I want to say that it's "wet". Is he using any effects, or is this really just the clean tone he gets from his fingers, pickups, and switch position?

For reference, here's the version I was listening to - a fantastic Audience recording.

I can cop that tone with my neck and bridge pickups out of phase. I call it "half phased" where it sounds like as subtle phaser but not a phaser?!

That's EXACTLY how I would describe it. Hmm, out of phase pickups, you say? Good to know. Thanks, Strummin!
