I've used nickel covered Super II's on a number of builds and really like them. I haven't noticed any significant difference in the sound so for me it was about the aesthetic. I know that in the early 80's there were several color combos on Tiger. I never noticed until today that in 1983 he used a set of covered pickups. Does anyone know if there were the usual Super II's or a brief experiment with something different?

Well I should have seen that since I participated in that thread! One thing I don't like about the covered pickups which might be a reason he didn't stick with them. With a brass or other metal pickup ring/pickguard, you need to make sure your tolerances aren't as tight as the plastic rings. If the pickups rock and hit the plate they make a much more audible noise than with tight fitting plastic rings. I either need to make the plate slightly larger or wrap the sides of the pickup.
