@ibrook52277 - that's all great info! I've also recently been experimenting a bit more and you inspired me this morning to mess around with a newly acquired attenuator. I'll add some recent findings / possibilities:

So as I mentioned before, for me a 60's Casino Hollowbody with P90 single coils really seems to nail the 73/74 Bobby jazzier tone very well and a 60's 335 Semi-Hollowbody with Humbuckers really seems to nail the 72 Bobby brighter tone very well. (of course, this finding is for these particular guitars at hand, but nothing we can do about that)

But that begs the question of why? Especially because Bobby used a 335 in 73/74. Here are some things I've found:

- the 60's Casinos would sometimes use 100K pots for a darker sound while 335's always seemed to use 500K pots which are very bright. I am guessing that Bobby swapped out the pots in his Sunburst 335 (and possibly his SG in 73) for 100K pots to darken his tone a bit to offer more of a contrast to Garcia's bright, snappy tone of Alligator and Wolf. Alembic had mentioned that they did some work on Bobby's guitars (along with Jerry and Phil) in the early 70's. Jerry also mentioned in a Q&A article below that two Gibsons can make things muddy so at that time they were certainly thinking about how their guitars work together on stage. (this article is on Waldo's site)

- as previously mentioned in the thread, Bobby switched from a Twin Reverb in 72 to a Furman pre-amp in 73 which would certainly affect the tone as well. Tough to find anything as bright and crisp as a Twin so imagine the Furman must have added some more roundness to his tone.

- based on photos, Bobby tended to stick with the pickup selector in the middle position. Tough to say what his volume/tone settings were on. My gut says fairly even and balanced with a touch more bridge in 72 and in 73/74 he switched that where the neck was more pronounced.

- Bobby also tended to strum his chords essentially over the neck pickup allowing for a more natural soft and dark yet still clear tone. This worked especially to his advantage in the 73/74 years.

- I connected my attenuator to my Twin while playing the Casino this morning. When the Casino is on the bridge pickup together with the attenuator at "bedroom" volume it comes pretty darn close to the 72 sound with the added brightness of the bridge. Bobby's 72 tone to my ears is defined by brightness and a touch of electric grit which would make sense of an amp approaching natural breakup.

I would basically say that the 335 is 90% of the overall 72 sound, the Casino 90% of the overall 73/74 sound and the Casino on bridge with attenuator gets around 75% to the 72 sound.

Fun experimenting! Look forward to your audio clips @ibrook52277! I'll see if I can get some decent sounding ones up as well.

Alright, finished wrapping presents early so had a few minutes to make a video of what I was mentioning above. Feel free to check it out at the link below...listening on headphones ideal to hear the nuances, but do as you will!

I’m playing a 66 335 with middle pickup selector for the 72 tone first…then a 66 Casino on the bridge with an attenuator up to try and emulate some of that 72 tone…then the Casino on the middle pickup selector for the softer 73 / 74 tone.

Sorry for the bad playing! Still learning.

Bill, tgo
Yes, correct...I'm just not set up for putting an actual video together at the moment...glad you hear some of the differences!

It’s truly amazing to me how deep some of y’all dive into the intricacies of guitar tones. Not my bag, but I admire your dedication.

To me, tone is too dependent on context to judge in any isolated, single setting. Just like color, flavor, and temperature, perception is influenced by the situation. These days I play mostly alone, at home, with a little boost and occasional drive through a loop station and into a mid-70s modded TR, and find all pickups on my strat+ deluxe, with varied tone and volume, useful in the context of my own loops. Some loops are Bobby-ish, some are more Jerry-ish, all of them are definitely just me and certainly no better. I did a little outdoor gig with this setup last summer and needed to adjust for that venue.

As far as attenuation goes, I may have accidentally stumbled on a poor-man’s solution to getting a more driven tone at lower volume. I’d stored my DRRI with Cannabis Rex speaker in my garage last summer, and found that a rodent had taken up residence in the cab. The little focker chewed away half the hemp cone for nest material. Figured I’d see what it sounds like, and well, it just sounds quieter to me, maybe less bass response. I get bedroom-ish levels at around 4 on the volume now. I guess not everyone’s got a speaker to burn, and your mileage may vary, but thought I’d throw it out there, anyway.

Merry merry. :santa:

Awesome, nice comparison between the different nuances! Funny enough Black Throated Wind is one of the songs I was playing to work on dialing this sound in. Going to record some stuff tonight. Happy to see the activity going in this thread!

This is correct in broad strokes, however I think Bobby was experimenting a bit more in the fall of 72. I saw some pictures from Sept/Oct of 72 and he was playing a SG in one and a Les Paul Doubelcut in another - which kind of shocked me, as I thought 72 was all the cherry red 345. 73 I definitely think of the SG and 74 is consistently that sunburst semi hollow - I though 335 but I’ll take your word on 330

Yeah, I recall that Gibson TV Yellow double cut as well. Think it was some Fox Theatre October shows where I saw a photo. It surprised me too! For all we know he may have been experimenting or his SG lost a tuning peg or something and they needed something to borrow!

And it’s the 335 he used in 74. The 330 is essentially the same thing as the Casino in that it’s the 335 shape, but with single coil P90’s. They were made exactly the same in the same factory at the time just with different brands. Bobby’s has humbuckers like a standard 335. Although it does sound like a Casino/330 to my ears based on my limited experience! The woods could be a big factor there though.

Also, I just noticed based on photos that on June 9th, 1973 he was using the SG and on June 10th, 1973 the red 345. Both shows at RFK with the same setup. I compared the Jack Straws intro on both and the one from the 10th is a touch brighter. Not by much, but a bit. Both very much sound like Bobby!

Took a video and recorded a bunch of audio. Still working on playing around with the settings and dialing everything in, but I’m pretty happy with the way these sound. It’s more like ~my take on a ‘72 Bob sound~ rather than something identical, but i think it captures the essence well enough. Still working on figuring out an ideal recording setup so excuse the quality

What pickup(s) are you on and how about the tone out of curiosity?
Thanks! Mostly on the neck pickup with the tone knob rolled all the way up. The electronics in the Epiphone are kind of junk and don’t always work properly if I have it set to the middle, and I find the bridge too snappy for Bobby’s 72 sound..gotta upgrade to a cherry red Gibson eventually. On the twin I have the attenuator at 1w and then volume at 10, treble at 9, mids at 10, bass at 5, reverb at 3.5. Still messing around a lot with the amp settings.
