I don't know the answer to your question specifically, but FWIW I have an Artcore AS8 (a "cheapie," in the neighborhood of $400), I replaced the stock pickups w/ Duncan "Seth Lover" pickups, and I freakin' LOVE the guitar. Probably not what you want if you're looking for a "Jerry" sound, but it's a great guitar, especially for the money.

can u get the "out of phase" tone with that guitar nicely?
If I understand correctly, it's really impossible to get that sound without installing a middle single coil pickup and also coil-splitting the humbuckers. there are several other factors, as well, including how they're wired. Michael Kaufman is pretty-much the expert here---he has the wiring diagrams.

You need the out of phase/series-parallel/coil split switch and you can get the tone with two pickups. I got great Bobby tone like that for years with a two humbucker Vantage. It might not be exactly period correct, but ya can nail Bobby tone pretty easy. The technique is the biggest part.
You do not need the vintage guitar although it would be nice just to have.
