Was just listening to this isolated clip from the Grateful Dead movie, and Jerry has delay on his tone in the opening and middle solos, sounds like maybe 1 repeat set a bit longer than a slapback.

Later in the clip ~ 4:35, it sounds like he turned it off. His tone is pretty dry with actually not that much reverb. But you dont see any pedals on the floor or see him turn anything off. Is it possible the delay was added in post or at the mixing board?

Think that’s more a matter of the actual recording. I recall reading how they tried a new recording technique for the October Winterland shows. Some people from the video team I think had some new ideas that the band signed onto. The crew was not happy as they were proud of their previous recordings from earlier in the year.

Lo and behold the recordings got a bit messed up and the band was not thrilled with them. They had to put out the Steal Your Face album for contractual purposes, but didn’t really want to.

Over time technology has allowed them to clean up the audio better. The old cassettes were quite echoey though. Might have had to do with the audience mix not being properly in sync. Can’t remember exactly.

Here’s hoping we get all 5 shows as a DVD / video box set next year for the big Anniversary!

He used a distortion pedal a few times in 74 especially on the May tour. But other than those can’t think of any.

Ok so then do you think the delay was applied in post? I guess the easy way would be to just listen to the show soundboards on archive

I was there for four of the five shows. I believe the delay was in my head. Rumors have it that it may have been chemically induced.

I just A/B'd the video track with the recording on Archive and the one on Archive doesn't seem to have the delay so it is something with the audio on the video's recording. There are various mixes for this run out there. All a bit strange, but so it goes!

The Grateful Dead movie (1974 Winterland) DVD release included a bonus disc which had an option to isolate tracks. IIRC (I my be wrong), Garcia's isolated guitar sounded like it had a delay. If so, was it added for the DVD?

Based on the link I posted above, it seems like that means they were using the GD Movie mix that Jerry and the team originally intended.

The movie audio was made from multi-tracks and most of what’s online are 2-tracks that were technically a different recording hence no delay since no ambient mics.

thanks for that link. Its cool to hear. I just listened as well. Definitely sounds like the delay was added by Garcia in the post production so likely a tape delay or reel to reel which is cool
