Just brought home a McIntosh 2100. Going to pair it with a SMS JG preamp and having a Hard Truckers Cab built. Anyone out there try out Tone Tubby Rosebud speakers? I'm leaning towards giving them a shot. Most would go for the Purple Haze which sound very compressed to me. Seeking sparkling Jerry cleans with the ability to get rich, extra squealing Trey harmonic overtones with my PRS Hollowbody Spruce on the dirty side (dual silver modded tube screamers/compression). Not looking for an exact JBL Jerry tones or Trey tones. To me, Jerry's distortion sound was lacking while Trey's clean tones don't touch Jerry's. Looking to build the best of both worlds on my journey to "the sound."

Not sure what those TTs run, but if it's comparable to Beyma Libertys, I'd encourage you to check out the Liberty's, they're JBL E120 clones. I was lucky to pick up a pair for a song, and have to admit I sometimes prefer them to my K120s - super clean and sparkly, but still with smooth, round edges. Really nice.

Honestly, I don't believe your speaker choice, whatever it may be, when combined with the gear you have and will be acquiring, is going to be a deciding factor in achieving these outcomes. I'm gonna follow your thread, though, as I'm curious what you may come up with.

My experience is effects can dirty you up fine but they're not gonna clean you up (I've had some argue to the contrary - I don't buy it). If it were me, I'd get as close to Jerry's cleans as I could, then work on Trey's compression and distortion.

Agreed. The speaker itself won't so much help the "effect." The speaker is more about the tone itself. Also agree about effects not helping clean tone. Nothing cleaner and more sparkly than a guitar plugged directly into the amp imo

G12H30's can sound great clean and dirty. I've owned some blackface style amps and the cleans were fantastic with those speakers. Same with Scumbacks M75's. I thought Trey's tone at FTW was pretty nice with the Purple Haze speakers. I've also been happy with JBL K's for clean and dirty.

OP: what did you decide? I have been using a Rosebud in 1x12 configuration for a while and just picked up a second to move to a 2x12 in a JDesign pine cab. The Rosebud has its own thing going on. It's bright and present (b/c I can't think of a better term) but not harsh. The bigger magnet gives it more low end oomph and high end extension but it's not boomy or strident. When loud you can get that "ping" sound on the attack that I associate with JG's live tones.

I don't aim for anyone's tone in particular but have found myself gravitating to things that are lively, clear, but still a bit mellow on the ears. The Rosebud does that for me. They're also very responsive in the sense that you can almost feel or "play" the speaker, which is a new one for me. I've been playing for 30+ years and like these more than any speaker I've had. But I like TT in general and what works for me may not work for others. If you're still considering and would like a clip LMK.

why not use a sf twin reverb for the pre .

btw, I have two TT Alinco Reds in my 73 twin.... they r only rated at 50 watts so u would think they r not strong enough but oh contrare, they hold up perfect r a great clean sound.... definitely not trebly or spiky tone tubby's are the shit. ( so to speak)
