Live Dead era sound

Hello. I was listening to some 69 and early 70 shows and Jerry has that "less sparkly" tone. How much of that is due to the guitar (and what are the major variables - scale length, humbuckers, etc.) vs the amp? (Was the amp a cranked twin without the mac?)

Also, I listened to a 68 show where I thought he was using a LP with P90s and thought it sounded similar to the SG, despite the pickups. Is that accurate or was it the recordings?

I think that is accurate. Jerry played the SG almost all of ‘69 and then switched to the Strat from Jan-Apr ‘70, then back to the SG in May and balance of ‘70. There was no Mac until like ‘76(?) just twins that received the Alembic treatment beginning in 72-73. 68-70were probably the most “stock” years for equipment.

Here is the exhaustive history -

As far as I know, the McIntosh came in to play in 1973.

Yea, the Macs were earlier than ‘76. They were used with the WOS in ‘74.
