The bottom reversed speaker is an early form of The Maestro Mic designed by Dan Healy.

Same seen used by Kadlecik and Mattson.

This is a new version s#00765 and Mr. Healy's instructions.

Waldo,

Are you asking if that pic is from ‘83? It looks like ‘79 to me?

Am I correct in my understanding that this mic is simply a way to mic ones speaker cab? Jerry was using this in addition to the Sennheiser at this time?

I don't know how important it is to pin down the date(s) but I recognize Jerry's MARS shirt from the Fall '80 Warfield acoustic/electric shows and I think the mic may be visible in this pic from the same run.

I was asking myself, but did not go back and preview my work before posting. When i uploaded the picture i questioned the file date used for the name of the picture. Sorry for the confusion, but i really do enjoy the pictures it produced.

Aside from the great photos and the date conversation...

Mike...do you have one of these gizmos? How does it sound? A google search reveals nothing on the front page. Commercially available?

At this point I assume this is from you UFO GD Archival information that only you and the CIA have.

I've seen that reversed speaker before. Pondered it. Noticed it wasn't always a thing.

I had noticed this at Garcia Band gigs back in the early 80's and I thought it simply was a "reversed speaker" and never questioned it. I also question why I never questioned it! Ha! As usual Mike, super freakin' informative.

Yes, that round one is mine i got him to make for me a few years back. Not Commercially available, and i have been unable to get a replacement/backup!

It is everything Healy stated. It is a very good Mic and one i am Grateful to have in my mic locker.

How cool.

I thought I remembered from my earlier attended Dead shows that they had vocal wedges hanging down from the PA trusses, pointing at the band members. Since they were still using floor wedges, too, I wonder if that was some sort of effort to replace the side fill monitors you would see on stages back then, kind of get the whole mix across the stage.

I think I remember reading about the Beatles using a reversed speaker as a mic at Abbey Road? I think it might be in Jeff Emerick's book?

yeah, this is not a reversed speaker. the mic was built into that reversed frame. My guess is it is the voicecoil used as the "antenna" to talk back to the mothership with a couple of filters to reduce the high end you would not normally hear with a traditional speaker and /or with a diaphram mic setup.
