Whatcha think?

Been digging into this December 78' Southeast tour to check out the very short lived TB1000A with oddball Single coils epoxied into humbucker casings...

Really great tone and Garcia is playing like fire... This particular show from Nashville on 12/16 is excellent! The Other One is super jammed out...

Some make the mistake in thinking that he only used the Vinci 677 string sets, with maybe only changing the bottom or top end strings only. But here is a clear example from his contents of his guitar case that he was indeed using the ENTIRE set of .011's with a .050 tops which are the 699's shown in that glass display case.

Also, looks like it has the OBEL with a switch as well with a humbucker wiring. Most likely with NO buffer like the TB500 #12

Great pics Mike... What's the story with that heavily damaged TB1000A body. Seem to remember th at was yet another one that was Jerry's or it had "JG" marked in it or something...

I kinda remember reading somewhere Ramrod wrecked one trying to route it for a middle pickup.

The story i was told is that IS the body remnants of Jerry's original TB1000a #51. The neck wherabouts i do not know. As stated an attempt to put the middle pickup in by a roadie was made and then it was sent back to Travis to fix, they could not and Travis develops the TB500 for Jerry and they eventually send him a new TB1000A which was #715 after all that and it n 78 he breaks it out.

The horrible part was during the auction for #715 it was given #51's pedigree and sold as that guitar!

Another fascinating thread. The whole year has such variety of Jerry tones - from my very favorite winter 77-78 slightly hairy and 3-d wolf tones to super clean and clinical sounding on some shows. I’m listening to December 78 shoes right now to get a good impression of the Travis bean of that era. The tones remind me a little of the June Portland show with Ibanez in so much as Jerry is trying to get his sweet spot tone from the neck pickup since there is no middle pickup on either of these guitars. There is some sweet, full, and clear tones to be had, but the guitar feel seems like it’s easier to overwhelm the rig with signal - too full and not as snappy. It’s not any great revelation, but it’s nice to hear Jerry challenged out of his comfort zone a bit. Refreshing.

Here is a Bean with a sketchy provenance. Supposedly intended for Jerry but never assembled, no less delivered.
Seems like $125K for something Jerry never touched is a bit of a stretch.

Reverb now has a whole story on it. Plus, EGC is selling a 1976 TB500 #14. It will only cost you $115,000.

Here is one that was found/acquired from the old Travis Bean Factory after it closed. It does have a Blaster and is Wired with a Wickersham filter and Fender Single Coil pickups, silver painted cavity, raytheon knobs and Alembic pots.
