I would love to see a pic of Jerry using an mxr envelope filter. I don't believe he ever used one.
If you are referring to the "drive" and "range" mini toggles found on some envelope filters, "range = Low and "drive" is usually set to Up except for certain songs such as shakedown street it is set to Down.
