Hey Guys,
I have had the 100 for a while now, and I don't plan on selling it, but it is such a loud pedal. And BIG. I wanted to know if the 90 is a suitable substitute, or any other constructive recommendations. The new Phase 99 looks really cool, but I doubt anybody has got to try it yet. All ideas are welcome. Thanks for any and all effort put towards my inquiry!
-Pete

If I recall correctly the Phase 90 is a 4 stage phaser, while the Phase 90 is a 6 stage. So the Phase 90 is not exactly one of the settings on the 100. The Phase 45 is only 2 stages and is is considerably more subtle than both the others. I no longer have a 90; I do have others like a Moog and a vintage Ibanez but haven't found them to be particularly Jerry-esque either-- if your going for the same tone as Jerry its kinda hard to improve on the equiptment he used ime. I love the Moog for tone generally, its stereo capable and has 6/12 stage settings; but it is huge and not gig friendly.

I have had both original script logo mxr phase 100 and the 90. I only use the 90 these days. It sounds like the right intensity, to me, and takes up less space.

I use an MXR reissue hand wired "script" phase 90 that has been modded by analog man - https://www.buyanalogman.com/ProductDet ... hase901974. I really love the sound of this thing - it's just beautifully lush. I get exactly the tone that I am looking for with this thing.

I had a stock phase 100 and it was just really thin sounding - I just couldn't get it to sound right. Then I had a phase 90 and did the R28 and C12 mods to it - http://guitology.com/how-to-mod-the-mxr ... ple-steps/. I liked this one a lot but eventually it broke and I moved on.

I went to a Maxon Rotary phaser which is a 4, 6 or 10 stage pedal - expensive, but pretty cool and a very good substitute for the phase 100. I think they stopped making them though.

Then I did the MXR reissue from analog man and it's my favorite so far.

I also have the AM modded Phase 90 script reissue and it is excellent sounding.

I have an old block logo 100, and I recently built both the P100 and P90 from ggg. I was very surprised how close the P90 came to sounding like the 100, albeit with less versatility. I think if you were really constrained for space, you should look in to that kit. As a bonus, it's on sale this month for I think $58.

That being said, the P100 kit is a little brighter than the block logo, but the LED and ability to plug it in have thrown the old one off my board (for now).

I have just switched to the Keeley, it is a 6 stage OTA more like the Mutron. Can either switch between preset fast and slow (with adjustable ramp speed) or tap tempo. It sounds as sweet or sweeter than my old Ross phasor which I have always loved.

Not a direct replacement but....

Small wise, Mooer makes either a 90 or 100 clone in half size. I have not used their pedals, but might try their Tri Fuzz for Gilmour stuff

The mutron phasers were optical, not OTA. The Phase 100 is also optical.

Hands down the coolest phase project (if you are up for it) is the nutron ii over at MadBean. Mine doesn't work right.... The guy who came up with it makes them for sale under the name "Luck Duck Pedals", but they are over $200. You can make it yourself for something like $50.

The biphase was optical but I thought the originnal mu phaser was ota? I do prefer the ross and keeley to the modern phase 100. Its harsh by comparison for me

You're right!

The Mutron Phasor is OTA, the Phasor II is LDR, and the BiPhase is LDR.

As an aside, I would give very useful parts of my body to play with the prototypes on this page:

Did you do the volume trimpot or mix knob? or just the true bypass/power jack?

Thanks
