New member from the Chicago area here! I have been listening to the Dead since the early 70s. My first exposure was Working Man's Dead, which I must admit didn't immediately click with me. The song that really opened my ears and mind was Jack Straw from Europe 72. I saw the Dead several times in the 70s, including a show at the International Amphitheater that featured the wall of sound - summer of 1974 I think.

I am a guitar player and have been studying Jerry's playing for many years. I particularly like his fills. Truly one of a kind!

Hi Phrygian, and welcome to the forum.

A summer Wall of Sound show would have, indeed, been in 1974. Most of it was used at a Winterland stand in February of ‘74. The WOS was officially unveiled at the “Sound Test” at the Cow Palace in March of ‘74, and retired after the five night stand at Winterland in October of ‘74 when “The Grateful Dead Movie” was filmed. I was at these shows, it was quite a sonic experience!
