It's cool to live and work in Appalachia, not only is it about the most beautiful place in the world but there are some incredible musicians the live here. One of the cool parts of my job is I get to help out with various media projects at my school (Radford University), this is one of the coolest, for the Appalachian Music and Culture Archive at our library we are doing a series on local musicians. Our first was on local banjoist Butch Robbins who played with Bill Monroe in the late 70s/early 80s.

This episode is on Sammy Shelor from just south of here in Meadows of Dan, VA (also the near the home of world renown guitar builder/player Wayne Henderson). Sammy is the banjo player for the Lonesome River Band. He also won the Steve Martin Prize for Banjo Excellence. He's a cool guy, we had fun eating chili and listening to him play.

The next episode is on Jens Kruger who is from Switzerland but lives just over the North Carolina border and my be the best technical banjo player I've ever seen.

Enjoy!
