Thanks for that. That's one of the things I was curious about. I have some ex-work windows laptops kicking around, so am likely to try those first. I could see picking up a Mac at some point. Can you recall what was better when using one in this context?

The issues were (mostly) with the firewire driver. Check the forums - there are tons of posts including a check list.

Maybe it's better now?
