I’m looking at this differently.

“All I can do is tell you I was very inspired and y’all know my music is all about the journey. ”

Here’s a black hip hop artist who’s not only familiar with the Grateful Dead, he finds the Dead personally and artistically inspiring and analogizes his career goals to the Dead in a complimentary fashion, all while potentially introducing a whole new demographic of music fans to the Dead.

I simply cannot find it in me to react to this negatively.

Jay-Z made the claim as well in 2003 on the song Encore

"Who you know fresher than Hov'? Riddle me that
The rest of y'all know where I'm lyrically at
Can't none of y'all mirror me back
Yeah, hearin' me rap is like hearin' G Rap in his prime
I'm, young H-O, rap's Grateful Dead
Back to take over the globe, now break bread"

I think he probably has the stronger claim to it
