I don't know what's int the box sets? You want live stuff for sure! The DVD's are great! It's hard though to give advice on this. You may only dig their studio stuff? You are in for a treat no matter. 8)

The DVD set is outstanding. I don't have the full set, but have purchased several of the one's in that set separately. I really appreciate the studio work that the Dead did as well, but the live stuff is where it's at. I would recommend the Dick's Picks series.

or Dave's picks

Some great stuff. For the price of the box sets you're looking at, you can get a wide variety of live CDs from different eras. Get a variety of years. If you're looking for shorter more rehearsed songs go with the studio recordings.

I actually put together a listening guide for this exact type of inquiry. If you're looking for commercially available stuff there are links to everything listed. Hope it's of some use. If you poke around the site you will be able to sample a wide range of stuff.

(Disclaimer: This is just MY opinion. Also, please excuse the shameless self-promotion.)
