So another forum member has a 1x12" closed-back cab that he'd like me to convert to open-backed, to hold one K120. I'm thinking: why not cut the hole in the shape of a lightning bolt with a jigsaw? Would that allow enough air to pass?

Actually every little bit you leave has an effect, i think. I had a cross cut out on the back, not for religious reasons, but for support/a place to mount a jack plate, that really wasn't needed after all. It had about 2/3 of the back opened. It sounded better when I got rid of it (totally open), not huge of a difference, but some. YMMV. I have no idea how geometry and physics affect tone in this circumstance. It may have been how I had the back opened. I would make it kinda big?
