I play C ionian - exclusively for the intro and thru the body of the song I'll throw in some mixolydian (Bb flat 7th).
A periodic alternating C--G bass is cool in between licks.

a sample (all I have is what's in my head at the moment)

C
e---------------------------------------------------------------------
b----------------------5----5------------------------5--5----5
g--7--5-------------5--5----5--------------------5h7----5----5
d--------7--5----5-----5----5--------5--7--5------------5----5
a--------------7---------------3--7-----------7------------------3
e-------------------------3--------------------------------3

C
e--8-8-8p7-7-7-7p5-5-5-5
b------------------------8-6p5-6p5-6-5-8
g

I seldom jam with studio versions. This is what I get from live stuff. Although, again this is from me and not any show. I suppose that's my disclaimer.
Hope this helps get you started. Great tune.

Definitely in C Major. As long as the bass is playing that "main riff" of the song, it should sound right. If the bass wants to deviate from the "main riff", then he too should stay in C Major (aka C Ionian).

I love jamming on this song, it can go on forever just dancing around that C Major scale (although some in my band say I go on TOO long, but hey...what can you do?)
