Hey Derek....
After seeing the film Grateful Dawg, I fell for this song big time.....

Try this out:

---------------------------------------------------1------1----------

---------------------------------------------------3------3----------

----2--2-----2--0-------------------------------- 2------2----------

----------3---------2-----0--2--3-------2------0---------------------

-----------------------3-------------3------3---------0--------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Has anyone tried it? It was from memory, so I didn't get the chance to sit down with the guitar and write it out. I'm sure though though that it sounds good....but if what I posted early does not, I can post a proper interpretation.

Here is what I came up with so far...It should be pretty close to the intro riff, but by not means perfect. Hope it helps.

E|-------------------------------------------------------
B|-------------------------------------------------------
G|-2--------2-------------------------------------------
D|----3--5-----5--2--------0--2--3--2-------0--2--0-
A|-------------------3--------------------3------------
E|-------------------------------------------------------

Does anyone know if these riffs are accurate. THey sound close enough for me. I don't have a lot of tabbin experience, just wondering if it was useful or close.

After hearing the "Shady Grove" album at a coffee shop while working with my study group for law school, I had to learn this tune.

Let me preface this with:
I am a keyboard player, and a mediocre one at that.
I am a self-taught guitarist and a bad one at that.
My guitar technique sucks.

Bearing all of that in mind, here's how I play the song:

12/8 Time? (if I'm not mistaken...I hear the tune as four triplets per line.)

Intro:
E----------------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------------
G----0--2-----0--2--0-------------------------------
D-3--------3-----------2--0-----0--2--3--0--0-----0-
A----------------------------3-----------------3----
E----------------------------------------------------

Chords for the verse:
Dm C Am
Dm C Dm
Dm F(bar: fret1)
F(bar: fret1) C A7
Dm F(bar: fret8)
F(bar: fret8) C A7
Dm C Am
Dm C Dm

Lead (Similar to intro)

[I like to put in a slight variation, which to me, makes it sound a bit like "Greensleeves" - I like to play "0h2h3" on the D String and play it as a short-short-long triplet, though on the album, they play it "0--2--3" and play it straight]

E----------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------
G-2-----0--2--0--------------------------------
D----3----------0h2p0-----0--2--3--0--0-----0--
A---------------------3------------------3-----
E----------------------------------------------

Then another verse (see above)

Extended Lead:
E----------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------
G-2-----0--2--0--------------------------------
D----3----------0h2p0-----0--2--3--0--0-----0--
A---------------------3------------------3-----
E----------------------------------------------

E----------------------------------------------------
B-------------1--1h3--1-----1-1h3p1-------------1----
G-------0--2-------------2-----------2--2--0--------2
D-0--3----------------------------------------3------
A----------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------

E----------------------------------------------------
B---------1--1h3--1-----1-1h3p1-------------1--------
G---0--2-------------2-----------2--2--0--------2-0--
D3----------------------------------------3---------3
A----------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------

E-------------------------------------------------
B-------------------------------------------------
G-0--2-----0--2--0--------------------------------
D-------3----------0h2p0-----0--2--3--0--0-----0--
A------------------------3------------------3-----
E-------------------------------------------------

That's pretty much it.

I play the basic lead after the odd verses and the extended lead after the even verses.

While listening to it, I can hear Jerry picking out a bassline while strumming. Sort of like "El Paso" but I can't quite seem to get it.

Any comments would be helpful. This is my first tab, and I got it by ear (then double checked my chord progression with the web and was pleasantly surprised).

does anyone know the strumming patter for the song? It sounds like i have it but it all falls apart at the end of the song

Newcastlek:

This song is basically a waltz.

Think: "Boom-Cha-Cha, Boom-Cha-Cha" or "1-2-3, 1-2-3"

(For an example of a waltz making its way into the pop arena, you need look no further than Billy Joel's "Piano Man")

Anyway, depending on the setting, I'll strum the song in one of two different ways:

For simplicity, I'll use the following abbreviations:
S = Strum
BN = Bass Note

Pattern 1:
BN____S__S__S__S
1__+__2__+__3__+

Pattern 2:
S________S__S__S
1__+__2__+__3__+

I'll say that when I'm playing along with the "Shady Grove" album, Pattern 1 seems to work better. But when I'm playing by myself, I prefer Pattern 2.
