That doesn't look familiar for the most part. I imagine you're trying to figure out later versions but I still don't recognize Part 1.

Admittedly I don't listen to much 80's Dead.

Yeah, I was listening to Without a Net. I much rather do the 70's stuff on everything but with other band mate opinions, you know how it goes

Jonarob, we approach both parts differently but our end result is similar.

I just tab out how the Dead do it, LOL.

I use the The Winterland 74' Movie and Wake of the Flood outtakes.

The acoustic Weather Report demo on the Wake of the Flood extras is extremely handy for figuring this whole shebang out.

The Winterland 74' video is hard to mis-interpret. It's all right there...

I totally dig....

To my ear, those early 70's Let it Grow's just cooked more with one drummer. Mickey Hart brought the bam-bam with some cool results, just not my bag.

Later ones are pretty much the same as earlier ones, except: earlier ones tend to become more open-ended in the final jam (pt 3 reprised), and sometimes go into Space and/or other songs/jams- sometimes not finishing the song, whereas later ones were almost always used as the last or 2nd-to-last song of set I (w/ maybe a dozen exceptions, post-'76) and therefore would keep one foot firmly on the ("broken") ground" to come back and do the ending. Other than that (and obviously dropping the rest of the Suite), there were never no overt changes I'm aware of.

During the verses I run on the c major and d major scales from the 8th and 10th frets and it sounds good. But on the jam those don't seem to fit as well.

Any pointers? Thanks!

I'll probably get flamed for asking/talking but...

I am just learning this part and seems to my ear that in full chords, the second part of the progression is:

Em F#m G | Em F#m G G Am B | Em F#m G Am B | x 2

not sure of the third part, haven't fooled with it yet. But the minors would fit with the key the jam started in. That is not to say that it didn't change, just what I think I hear and what sounds right playing alone on the guit. So willing to be educated on this. That said, if you only play the bottom three notes, you would get what would be the base of the major chords also. The Dead, especially Bobby, did a lot of partials. I am not an overly knowledgeable person here so let the blood bath begin.

As long as I am out on a limb, here is what I play for the walk down. Again alone on an acoustic guitar in my living room. It is all ears and memory.

Well it is probably a mash of parts, but that is what happens when one tries to adapt the music to a single instrument.

Without sitting down and playing to it is this the 70's style 1st part of the long jam (D....C-G, repeat) verses the 80's version of:

D-D-D-D / D-D-F-Em (repeat X times....)

????
