It seems like the verse changes chords at "Moving in closer". When I play it with the D chord all the way through the verse it doesn't sound right.

You should hit a G chord on the "moving in closer" and "fade on a downbeat" parts.

Sorta, but I see and hear Bobby doing more of this for G chord voicing:
e--x--
b--8--
G--7--
D--5--
A--5--
E--x--

Recommendations on a good version? I understand that may seem like a trick question to some

My connection is slow today but there is a super clear youtube video from 95, I think, where Bobby is playing his stainless steel Tele.

Yeah, I just watched that one. That last show really isn't half bad. Although, I know there are more kicking versions out there. I'll probably poke around spring '93.

Yes, better versions but I thought this version was particularly clean, all parts present, and played well!

strumminsix. that's an awesome voicing/tab for the G (or essentially a Dsus4 cause the D is in the bass)

During the "if what when where and how..." part Bob plays:
Em G F# D C, then Bm Bm/A Em
E G F# D C, then Bm Bm/A Em
