Does anybody know approximately when the hum buckers were put into wolf in 78?

78 is one of my favorite years. Call me a a nihilist or whatever, but 78 had some energy of 77 with some darker undertones. In addition, its my favorite Jerry tone year. I was listening to Dick's Pick's 25 the other day. The tone on the Scarlet is my favorite example of Jerry tone, and I really want to figure out if it was recorded with bucker wolf or single coil wolf. It came from a May 10 show. Thanks for the input.

Search posts by GRATEFULREDHEAD. He's getting some very 78 tone with his custom modded LTD strat I believe.

Matt, I'm flattered that you would Point our friend in my direction for example of good 78 tone. That is pretty much my favorite era of Jerry's Tone, If I were forced to pick one. I like almost all of them for one reason or another but that's consistently my most favorite. I think what's really been getting me to that place lately is this Aria Pro Guitar that I had Brian at IO guitars customize for me. He did sort of a hybrid late Wolf and Tiger sort of setup. It's got the scale length of Tiger in that it's 25 and 1/2 in, Wolf had a shorter scale I believe 25" like a Paul Reed Smith. But the pickups are humbuckers, the super distortions, I run them split a lot but I also use the humbuckers especially when I'm using the mutron. I can point you to some videos if you'd like just let me know and I'll send you some links. And I'll let you know what my settings are and all the rest of my gear chain if you're interested. Best of luck in your quest for that tone! It's amazing how many great resources there are on this forum people like Matt, Waldo, Brian, the list goes on and on and on.

Sorry to disagree, but I'm fairly certain that both Waldo and Brian at io have posted on here that it's a 25 inch scale for Wolf.

That's why it's good to read. Jerry liked the 25.5 scale length of Stratocasters and that is the reason he had his custom guitars built with 25.5 scale length.

I'm pretty sure dozin lists it at 25 per Irwins description of it

If you check the Wolf page on Dozin as well as on the Gurnsey auction site, it appears that in Irwin's own words "The string scale is 25". While I ( and most builders) use 25.5" scale. I think the 25" scale is indeed correct. I used the best flat perspective picture I could find to scale the width of the SDS-1 to the scale length and it is definitely closer to the 25" mark.

Edit: While the scale to me appears to be 25" based on the midpoint, it seems to be intonated with the bridge and saddles so far back that the overall length from nut to saddles is closer to 25.5" I'd love to see a VERY hi-def picture to see what the real deal is!

Interesting, I personally think scale length has a HUGE impact on tone, and playability for that matter. I would say it matters more than most people think it would. On a related note, you guys have probably seen this guy on you tube, he is a real controversial character, but i kind of like him, even though his videos are about 5 times too long. He does know his stuff, although some of you would be aghast at his claims solid state amps are just as good as tube amps and tone woods make no difference in an electric guitar, i feel he has some good info and solid points in this video about scale length and what not. He really rips the gibson folks a new one, although it seems like he does that all the time. [url]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WakFMwO9VM&t=435s[url]
