In songs like Tennessee Jed in 71?72,jerry hits a string of high notes I think what you would call a slur?and to me it sounds like a pedal steel guitar for those few notes, does any one know is he getting that from a wah pedal maybe or volume pedal or just a totally dialed in amp with mods? In a video I saw from Germany beat club in 72 ? For a split second I could see a pedal like a wah if he is using a wah pedal it must have been just pushed for high notes? If I had a wah I'd try ? Sorry for the ignorance I've been playing mostly acoustic my whole life now iam really interested in learning the nuances of electric playing and tone.thanks

Jerry used a color sound volume/wah in 1972, but otherwise it was basically guitar > fender twin, period. He also had a booster installed in the guitar (an Alembic made stratoblaster) which you can get in a pedal today. A really basic circuit.

What you might be hearing some times are pinch harmonics, a technique from Roy Buchanan that jerry started using in late 72 on tunes like Loser. No effects required, but lots of finger dexterity.

he picks them out above the 24th fret.

not 72, but a good one. this is probably around the time he begins to stop doing them and just use the overdrive/distortion instead.

Yup--you're hearing the pinch harmonics on the last verse ("...kicked my dog")-->pinch harmonics. Jerry used this infrequently, but used it well on Tjed, Loser. I've also heard it in Deal, West LA at times.

Where else have folks heard the pinch?
The Europe 72 China cat and also don't let go in Cats Down under the Stars! But I love the kicked my dog pinch, turned many of my friends on to the dead with that :P

I think he frets them in the standard soloing position from about the 12-15 fret, especially on loser. That's the pinch harmonic that creates the octave above the fretted note (sounding like it is from the 24th fret or higher). But maybe I misunderstood you.... he picks them out above the 22nd fret, yes agreed!

Before I knew what pinch harmonics were, I used to explain that sound to myself as "Jerry is playing off the pickups". I still can't play them... yet.

Damn, Jer's pinching all through this solo! Mighty fine. I wonder if he's doing index finger or thumb pinches?
