I am going to convert my blues jr into a head and build a cab for the the speaker. So I have a few questions about the design to keep me as close to/in the ballpark of Jerry tone as possible. These are the dimensions I am thinking about using, https://tonetubby.com/product/speaker-c ... t-12-1x12/ Also, I am thinking about using pine. Are those dimensions too big, is it better to have a smaller cab? Should it be open back, 1/3 open, 2/3 open? Is birch better than pine? Thanks for the time.

I built a Hard Truckers-style 1x12 cabinet out of 1/2" Baltic birch a few months ago to house a JBL E-120. Dimensions are approx 15" x 15" x 12". Back is open except for a 3" wide birch strip at the top and a 2" wide birch strip at the bottom. I've been very happy with it. It may just be psychological, but it sounds much better to me than particle board.

I ordered a 1x12 from Tracy a little over a month ago and it's due to arrive today...checks FedEx tracking... ohh, it was delivered about 90 min ago. He indicated this latest batch might be it for awhile, sounded like he needed a break from building cabinets.

@Franklin's Timmy: Thanks for the kind words.

I built the guitar about 4 years ago from a solid slab of claro walnut and a stock bolt-on maple neck/ebony fretboard from Carvin to which I added matching 1/8" walnut headstock laminate, shaped the headstock, and applied Irwin eagle decal before several coats of finish. I'm getting ready to add buffer, OBEL, and brass pickup mounting plate that I just milled up this week (current plate is maple). Wish me luck...

As for the cabinet, if you have a table saw (and jigsaw for the speaker hole -- router even better) you should be able to build a box like that with a few hours labor -- including making templates. I still need to mount handles on mine because its weighs close to 40 lbs with the E-120 in there and it is awkward to lug to gigs and and outings.

I built a 1x12 open back combo amp box out of walnut and maple. I chose the woods for looks, but they definitely impart a bright snappy quality the tone.

Thanks for the replys everyone, much appreciated.
@BJolley well done it is a beauty. I bet playin on it is a real treat. Definitely good luck on the mods. Quick question for you. What input jack and speaker wire did you use on your cab?

@franklins, nothing fancy. I believe the speaker wire was just some 14 or 16 gauge Radio Shack brand that I had lying around. I believe the jack was a Switchcraft 1/4" mono jack mounted to a round recessed jack plate.
