Outside of the Phred guitars, for $600 you can get used Mexi Strat, a Stratoblaster and a set of DAllen Voodoo 69's. No OBEL but would be a great bargain.

I'ld get a nice parts caster off of ebay, just be patient and wait for something with some decent pickups. fender custom shop 69's are always a good place to start. add a blaster if you still have some money left over. passive will get you most of the way there, though.

I'm just not sure if I want the guitar to look identical to jerry, I'm more interested in the sound and feel if possible

+1 Or you can wire it up with a buffer and OBEL if so inclined. Maple fret board. Gets very close.

I picked up a Fender Squier Classic Vibe 60th Anniversary Stratocaster off the used rack at Guitar Center a couple years ago for next to nothing (it was a customer return, still had the plastic on the pickguard). I'm shocked at how well it played right off the rack and the pickups sound great.

I ended up blocking off the wammy bar and added a Stratoblaster (the bronze even matchs the gold hardware pretty well). Well under $600, sounds VERY Jerry, IMHO it has an authentic look without being a copy too.

If you're interested, I have an early 80's Ibanez Blazer (Fijugen built, Strat) with Jerry electronics. It has buffer, obel, bakelite pickguard (non-conductive - prevents static charge noise), phase switch, new frets, strap locks & fully shielded.

If you don't like the pickups, you can easily swap out the current pickups.

PM me if interested.
