I ran across this video on youtube this morning - it is Jerry playing the solo in Bertha over the years (1974 1977 1979 1981 1985 1995). Great listen for comparing his playing, tone, etc.

My vote is for '74 BTW

I've always been partial to the late 80's versions but '77 does have some beauties.

This is a really cool video. It's interesting to hear the 'arc' of Jerry's playing. 71 and 74 are my favs (74 is my fav fav). 81 sounds like cocaine and the 95 sounds sad--Jerry seems to be missing some notes.

But it's really amazing that he played the same song for over 20 years and still had some interesting things to say almost every time.

Check out the Bertha on the 1988 new years show as well as the 1988 show from Saratoga springs NY, both of these shows have excellent solos. Prime examples of the golden tones.

'81 and '71 are fiery-fingered and bubbling with creativity compared to all the other examples, imho. That's the stuff. The vid creator got a couple of the pics misdated, as far as illustrating the year: "1977" is one from 76 (w/the TB-1000A), and "1985" is clearly post-coma, '87 or '88 Jerry. Kind of a fun idea to hear the progression of a particular structured solo, through the years.
