Hi Ratdog33 - sounds like a really choice guitar. Any chance we might be able to see some photos? Was this custom-ordered from SLM w Grover Imperials and EMG? Is the EMG a UST / piezo or a contact pickup?

Hmmm - two red stars ** ?

Yes, this sounds like a really really nice guitar.

If anyone is interested, Guernsey's now has details posted for the Dec 2 auction LEGENDARY GUITARS & MUSICAL TREASURES, which includes Garcia's GY-1 prototype w Modulus neck as well as a Garcia-played/-owned(?) PENCO.

This Yairi guitar - the "Squaw Valley guitar" - is remarkable as it does have a cedar top, Modulus graphite neck w simple dot fret markers, the unique tulip-style (DY88) headstock and the lotus abalone inlay above the nut, a combination of features unlike any of the other Garcia Yairis.

Auction details can be viewed at http://www.guernseys.com/v2/guitars_mus ... ures.html# and the catalog can be downloaded.

I assume guitar #6 is not the same guitar Jerry is holding in the picture as the headstock inlays are different. Is Jerry holding another one of his guitars, or is the guitar up for auction possibly not his guitar?

Could be that in the other photo he's posing for a AY promo photo?

If you are referring to the B&W photo in the Guernsey's banner, no, that is some random photo of Garcia, with some "random" guitar - it is a full-bodied guitar (no cutaway) and the larger dot markers on the neck do not look like either Martin or Yairi - not sure what it is.

The guitar up for auction was certainly his, and is well documented per Grisman-Garcia performances and recording sessions - and the photo above - and was gifted to Grisman's recording engineer Dave "DB" Dennison. The grain pattern of the cedar top is quite distinctive, as is the headstock.
