OBEL help...DONE WITH PICS

OBEL help...DONE WITH PICS

Postby tnt1234 » Fri Oct 02, 2015 7:40 pm

Everything else is good - OBEL, non OBEL, coil taps, switch selector, all good...but the tone does not sound to be working. And on top of that, it sounds a little muddy or dull...not quite like ton rolled off....hard to describe. Just not lively like wide open tone....

I tried varying the wiring by moving the cap from the switch output to a more typical wiring where the cap goes to ground and the tone and volume are linked - no change.

I guess it could be a bad tone pot? Or something else....

Does it matter which outside lug on the volume pot I use for input?

Pics below - hope it's clear enough - and thanks in advance for the help....otherwise, build came out nice and I'll post pics as soon as I fix this issue....

The tone cap should go between the common on the pickup selector and the tone pot.
What tone pot is that? I can't make it out. Should be 500k
Can't make out the cap value either. Should be.02uf ceramic.
Looking straight down on your photo, the input on the volume pot should be the right lug. Ground should be the left lug and output is the middle lug.
Hope that helps some.

thanks - I think that is what I have, but when i cross reference a standard tele diagram, it looks to me like I should switch the input lug on the volume.

But, mind you, the volume pot is working fine as I have it.

Thanks again.

If the volume pot is wired the way I explained, it is correct. Never mind the original Tele wiring. This is totally different.
That tone cap is not a ceramic disk capacitor. It has to be a .02uf ceramic disk cap for Jerry tone. Like this (as an example,,no affiliation):
http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200 ... =824&kw=lg

The one you have in there is Polypropylene. It will not be crisp like the ceramic disk cap.

Thinking what you have as opposed to knowing what you have will usually be a hassle of some sort.

Cool - good to know.

But regardless of the jerry tone cap, this one doesn't seem to be working at all. So my wiring must be messed somehow....

I can't see for sure, but for the tone pot, looking down at your pic, the cap should go to the middle lug and the ground goes to the right lug. Nothing goes to the left lug.

I thought this had been discussed somewhere before: viewtopic.php?f=419&t=17230&hilit=two+pickup+guitar

Well, I tried that, and nothing. Then I switched the cap and the ground at the tone pot - so the cap goes to the far tone input (opposite input from the pic above) and the ground is coming from the tone output.

And that worked.....

Which makes sense to me, but is not at all how wold and tiger diagrams are drawn, so it makes me wonder if I have something seriously screwed up....

But everything seems to work. OBEL, regular, etc...

Very strange....

Thanks for the help and any additional thoughts. Will post pics of (i think) completed guitar as soon as it stops raining in Jersey and I can take some pics outside.

Don't forget that the pots in your guitar are positioned in the opposite direction than in the diagrams (left is right), that's why I got down to the individual lugs and connectors.

The volume pot has to be 25k.

Mostly Tiger, but this is a two pup with a gibson switch, and one tone, so it's not exactly the same. I put a 500k in the last one I did and it seemed to work. Is the 25k specific for jerry tone? Or is it generally good practice on an OBEL guitar?

Ok, just wanted to make sure you saw that it says 25k in the diagram. The 25k is very specific for Jerry tone as well as the function of the OBEL in conjunction with the buffer. Doesn't matter if it's two pickups with a gibson switch. It's still a signal going on a path.
It makes night and day difference how everything responds. You will be happy if you do it over.
