Weber Cali 12" alnico review

Postby gratefulredhead » Mon Mar 14, 2016 9:28 am

I put one of these babies in my 2 X 12, right next to my vintage, mint original cone JBL K120, and I have to say, I was in love. I can switch between speakers in my custom cab, so I A/B tested and they sound so similar to me to be nearly indistinguishable. Together thay were amazing.

They get my highest accolades. Long live Weber speakers!

I have the ceramic version, and it pales in comparison to my K120.
All's well that sounds well.

That's because you have the ceramic. The alnico is very different. The high end is much sweeter. Side by side there is little difference between my K120 and the alnico Cali.

aluminum dust cap or paper?

Isn't the JBL much more efficient (louder) than the Weber?

The JBL K120 is 101db SPL, not sure what the Weber. Here are some details in comparison.

Weber 12" Alnico California
12", 40oz AlNiCo magnet boosted with ceramic, 60 watt, 2" voice coil

JBL K120
12", 12Lb AlNiCo magnet, 100 watt, 4" voice coil

Right, that's what I'm saying, all the Californias I have used (Ceramic magnets) were way less loud than the K-120's or D-120F's. And, the folks at Weber have told me that the Alnico Cali is less efficient (by 2-3 dB) than the ceramic Cali. That's why I am surprised the OP didn't notice a big difference between the speakers, at least in terms of volume.

But heck, if OP is enjoying the speakers, that's what counts, and that's great! :-)

Yes,I noticed a drop in volume going from the K to the Weber. I was describing the overall tone. They are very similar in that respect. In fact, playing at lower volumes inaclub rather than an outdoor venue, I was very pleased running the Weber by itself. It got that sweet breakup that helps define Jerry's sound at a much lower volume. They really are fantastic speakers. The two sound very good together as well. When I would run the K by itself I had to really crank the ampup to get the high end to sweeten up. Nice to have options!
