Please help! UJB question

Please help! UJB question

Postby Helponway » Mon Sep 21, 2015 8:59 pm

Hello everyone! I was wondering if someone could please help me understand what Bobby is playing during the UJB jam? I know it's dm-g-c & the Dm is in 4/4 & the g-c is 3/4. However I can't seem to get it to sound right? Any tips on positioning, chord forms, or the little fills he does would be much appreciated! Thank you all in advance!!

If you haven't, listen to the studio version and you will understand the origin of it.
As it evolved and the riff was added, after the first dm is played, it actually goes g, c, dm (starting on the g every time) and hangs on the dm for a few beats. Gets a little tricky when the riff is added but the syncopation is awesome. Bob played it a lot of different ways during the jams as did the rest of the band.
Hope that helps a little. I'm sure a Bobby player will chime in that can explain it better.

Thank you both! It helps a bit but I'm still having trouble really getting it down. Something I'm missing I think, idk. Hopefully some other kind souls will chime in soon :-)

Jerry is playing something like this.

(/) Slide Up (\) Slide Down (h) Hammer On (p) Pull Off (b) Bend (r) Release (v) Vibrato

E|------------------------------------
B|------------------------------------
G|-------2--0------------------------
D|--2/3--------3--0h2p0-----2--0--
A|-----------------------3-----------
E|------------------------------------

Bobby is playing something like this;

(/) Slide Up (\) Slide Down (h) Hammer On (p) Pull Off (b) Bend (r) Release (v) Vibrato

E|----------------------------------------
B|----------------------------------------
G|-------7--5v--4h5p4-----4-----2v----
D|--6/7------------------5------5-------
A|----------------------------------------
E|----------------------------------------

or something like this in later years;

E|------------------------------------
B|------------------------------------
G|-----7--5v--4h5p4----4----------
D|--5------------------5------5--7v--
A|------------------------------------
E|------------------------------------

Once Jerry strays away from his line and begins to take the reins, bobby begins to just vamp on the G - C - Dm chord shapes.

hope that helps.

Not sure if i have written this out legible enough for someone else to understand, but i do hope it can help give some guidance on how to sing and count out the rhythm. After the last chorus ending on the D with "Home", they immediately switch to the D minor and a quick (2,3) count and then begin the jam chord progression below.

E|----3-------3------3------5-------------5------------5---
B|----3-------3------5------6-------------6------------6---
G|----4-------4------5------7-------------7------------7---
D|----5-------5------5------7-------------7------------7---
A|----5-------5------3------5------5---5-------5---5-----
E|---------------------------------------------------------
------da------da----da---da-dah (1) (2) (3) (1) (2) (3)

or:

1 and 2 and 3 (1,2,3) (1,2,3) 1 and 2 and 3 (1,2,3) (1,2,3)

or:

G and C and D (1,2,3) (1,2,3) G and C and D (1,2,3) (1,2,3)

Waldo is correct and that's a great way to explain it. I will add that listening many, many times and becoming very familiar with the song as well as playing along will help a lot too.

We started playin UJB a couple of months ago. I've been playing it for 40 something yrs and have it down, but when we started playing it together the timing became a big issue for a couple members who had not played it much before. That tempo change comes very natural once the song is in your head.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to reply! It is all very helpful advice. I think with some practice I'll be able to get it down. I can hear it & know it by heart( grew up on the boys, my parents we're heads) but I think my issue is just the timing mostly. Also nailing those little color tones Bobby loves to randomly throw in there
