Jerry's Mystery Box - Solved

Postby waldo041 » Sun Jul 17, 2016 12:49 pm

There has been a long debate over just what the box taped to Jerry's rig with the knob was.

A friend reached out to me who now owns this box as well as one Phil Lesh used.
As I have stated before, and both Healy and Parish have confirmed, It is a volume control for the monitor Jerry used with Phils bass on his side of the stage.

Here is Phils. Phil also used a sub mixer on stage for Guitar, Kick and Vocals with his Box most likely used as a Master volume for that.

awesome discovery/confirmation... what are some of the more far-fetched theories about this knob? "He used it to dial out Weir altogether on Little Red Rooster slide solos..." ;)

What i wonder, Mike. is where Jerry was actually hearing the bass from. Was it from his vocal wedge, or was it from that wedge that sat in front of Brent's organ pointed across the stage, which I assumed was just for keyboards? That would be my guess.

I can't stand hearing anything but vocals out of my vocal wedge, it distracts me when I'm singing. I can only imagine having a super active bass player dropping bombs.

Phil usually had a Leslie over by his rig since he was so far away from the keyboards.

Phil used to tweak his little cue mixer very extensively when they went to the in-ears. I read somewhere -- I think it was in McNally's book -- that everyone had their own mixes dialed up for the in-ears, but the sound crew was dismayed that only Mickey had a full mix of everyone else in his ears, mostly everybody else just wanted to hear themselves.

The wedge in front of the B3 was Jerry's Phil monitor.
